Hardware: Open Source?

This article in GoogleReader by Brian Proffitt caught my attention although I am not or have ever been a computer tech.

As mentioned by Brian Proffitt, “open source hardware doesn’t get much attention outside of geek circles, but it is starting to have a real-world impact.”

By definition, Open Source Hardware allows everyone to examine, duplicate and modify” a component or device just like what we are already able to do with resources under the CreativeCommons license.

I can only imagine how much fun (and learning) youngsters will have now that they can “download the specs and build the device” on their own.

This is fascinating!

  1. Rita,

Open Source Hardware does increase the possibilities for our students. I can imagine building some of devices would work great in engineering curriculum.

    1. Open Source Hardware and the 3D Industry

Hi Cari, I guess the risk takers, innovators and the young would certainly welcome the opportunity to either build or modify hardware to tailor it to their liking. Professionals in the field of engineering must be already thinking of ways to include such projects in their teaching.

Another interesting point is that open source hardware is having a big impact in the 3D industry -- from toys, to printers, etc.

I quite enjoy learning about all the possibilities out there!
